Character Manager started with a problem everyone writing on the internet has had at least once: a post that was almost within the limit, and no way to know by how much. So we built the tool we kept looking for — a counter that updates live, tells you exactly which characters are being counted, and shows a progress bar against whatever limit you give it.
What we count
The tool measures eight things at once: total characters, characters without any whitespace, words, sentences, paragraphs, whitespace, and estimated reading time (at 200 words per minute) and speaking time (at 130 words per minute). Words are any run of non-whitespace characters; paragraphs are blocks separated by blank lines; sentences end at a period, exclamation mark, question mark, ellipsis or a newline.
What happens to your text
Nothing — and that is the point. Character Manager is a static page: there is no server to send your text to, no database to store it in, and no analytics event that includes what you typed. All counting runs in your browser, and when you close the tab, your text is gone.
Who is behind this site
This site is part of a small family of free, single-purpose web tools. Each one does exactly one job, runs entirely in your browser, and costs nothing to use. The sites are kept online with the help of advertising; the tools themselves are free and will stay that way. If something is unclear, broken, or missing, please get in touch — we read everything.
