How it works

Paste or type

Drop in a tweet, a meta description, an essay or a whole document. There is nothing to configure — the counts start moving the moment the first character lands.

Live counts

Eight metrics update on every keystroke: characters, characters without spaces, words, sentences, paragraphs, spaces, and estimated reading and speaking time.

Optional limit

Know your ceiling? Enter it (280 for a tweet, 160 for a meta description) and a progress bar shows exactly how close you are — and turns red the moment you cross it.

Why count characters?

Social posts

Platforms truncate what they cannot fit. A counter with a limit set to the platform's cap keeps you on the right side of the cut.

SEO meta descriptions

Search engines show roughly 150–160 characters of your description. Count to make sure the important part is not clipped.

SMS and notifications

Messages longer than 160 characters split into multiple parts and cost more. A quick count tells you where the boundary sits.

Essays and briefs

Word and sentence counts keep submissions inside their limits and reading time keeps long copy honest with its audience.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work offline?

Yes. The counter is a static page with no backend — once the page has loaded, all counting happens locally in your browser.

How are sentences counted?

A sentence ends at a period, exclamation mark, question mark or ellipsis, and newlines also act as boundaries. Text with no terminal punctuation counts as one sentence. Abbreviations like "Mr." count as a boundary too — the count is an estimate, not a grammar analysis.

Are newlines counted as characters?

Yes. Every newline is a character in the total, it counts toward the "Spaces" tile (all whitespace), and it is excluded from the "No spaces" tile.

Is my text stored anywhere?

No. Nothing you type or paste is sent to a server, logged, or written to storage. Close the tab and it is gone.

Does it count unicode correctly?

Yes. Characters are counted the way your browser stores them, so accented letters, emoji and other multi-byte characters each count as a single character in the total.
